Greenwich Village

A neighborhood of lower Manhattan that today houses mostly upper-middle-class residents. Historically, especially in the 1960s and 70s, it was a haven for artists and bohemians and the birthplace of the East Coast beatnik movement. The name is often shortened to "the Village."
